Devils Lake (Early Head Start)

Early Explorers Early Head Start Serving the Devils Lake Community and Ramsey County

Program Overview

Early Explorers Early Head Start is a federally funded community-based program for eligible families with infants, toddlers and pregnant women.

Early Explorers Early Head Start is funded to serve 50 children in Ramsey and Wells Counties.

The Early Explorers Early Head Start office is located on the North Dakota School for the Deaf Campus operating center based and home based programming year round.

Center Based Services

Parents must be working or attending school full time to be eligible for center based services. The Early Learning Center has one infant room and two toddler rooms open from 8:30 am—5:15 pm. Monday to Friday without cost to parents.

In center based services, children receive high quality care. Individual plans are designed for each child to focus on development in six major areas: social/emotional, language/communication, cognitive development and general knowledge, approaches to learning, motor development and physical health.

The environment, curriculum and learning approaches support a child’s individual pattern of development. Planning and implementation of activities focus on the child’s interest and challenge their skill level, encourages problem solving, builds attention span and promotes curiosity.

All Infant/Toddler Teachers and Family Visitors are degreed profes- sionals with education in Early Child- hood.

Home Based Services

Family Visitors provides services to enrolled families through weekly home visits for approximately 90 minutes in the family home. On each visits, staff present activities, information or opportunities to encompass a child’s individual growth and family development issues.

Families have the opportunity to participate in weekly socialization opportunities at the Early Explores site.

Early Head Start reserves 10% of its enrollment for children with special needs.

Health and Nutrition

Early Head Start recognizes that every child must be healthy and well nourished to learn and grow to his or her full potential.

The program focuses on prenatal health providing information on fetal development, nutrition, labor and delivery, breastfeeding and post natal care.

Early Head Start works with families to ensure they have medical coverage and are receiving regular preventative care including immunizations, well baby checks, nutritional assessment, hear- ing, vision, mental health and developmental screenings.

Parent Involvement

Parents are the most important influence in a child's development. An essential part of the Early Head Start program is the involvement of parents in parent education and program planning and operating activities. They serve as members of the Policy Council and Parent Committee and have a voice in program operations.
