Program Overview

Early Explorers Head Start is a comprehensive child development program which serves income eligible children ages 3 to 5. The program is child-focused and has the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children without cost to families.

The Early Explorers office is located at 392 North Street West in Harvey and offers Center and Home Based services. The Pre-school Classroom operates Monday—Thursday from 8:30-3:00. Parents must be working or attending school to be eligible for center based services. Before and after school child care is available for payment.

Child Development—Classroom

Individual plans are designed for each child to foster intellectual, physical, social, emotional and language growth. Head Start classrooms focus on language, literacy, mathematics, science, creative arts, physical health, social and emotional development and approaches to learning.

The classroom provides hands on activities, giving children the opportunity to make choices. Children
participate in group activities as well as develop individual skills through learning centers.

Head Start believes that children learn through play. Our environments are child-friendly and focus on developing the entire child.

Head Start reserves 10% of its enrollment for children with special needs. Head Start has strong partnerships with the special education unit, school districts and other entities to ensure quality services.

Classroom Teachers are degreed professionals with education in Early Childhood. Staff must adhere to the Head Start Performance Standards which significantly exceed state child care and preschool licensing.

Health and Nutrition

Head Start recognizes that every child must be healthy and well nourished to learn and grow to his or her full potential. Preventive health services are central to Head Start’s comprehensive array of services.

Health assessment and early identification of health-related needs ensure each child receives medical, dental, mental health, and nutritional care, including medical, hearing, vision, speech/language screenings and dental exams. Children enrolled in the Head Start classroom will brush their teeth everyday and receive nutritious meals and snacks.

Parent Involvement

Parents are the most important influence in a child's development. An essential part of the Early Head Start program is the involvement of parents in parent education and program planning and operating activities. They serve as members of the Policy Council and Parent Committee and have a voice in program operations.
